Can Hypnotherapy Help with Anxiety?

Hypnotherapy is an alternative therapy in which hypnosis induces a relaxed state. It can help people change their thoughts, behaviours, and perceptions. Hypnotherapy has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even physical pain. It can also improve confidence, reduce stress, increase creativity, and promote relaxation. By focusing on the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy helps to uncover underlying causes that fuel symptomatic behaviour and replace them with more beneficial feelings and beliefs. The hypnotherapist acts as a guide taking the patient into a state of deep relaxation so they can access the internal resources necessary for healing and transformation.

How Hypnotherapy Works

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will guide the individual into deep relaxation through hypnotic suggestions. Once relaxed, the therapist will help the individual uncover underlying issues contributing to their anxiety. The goal is to access these deeply held beliefs and patterns to bring about positive change in behaviour and attitude towards life.

Within hypnotherapy, there are different approaches and different schools. In its purest form, Hypnotherapy is focused on using suggestions to bring about change in the person while in a state of hypnosis.

Many hypnotherapists will combine hypnotherapy with various psychotherapy techniques to achieve the best outcomes for their clients or patients.

All types can be very effective in treating anxiety. Some hypnotherapists will use ‘regression’ techniques to help individuals get to the root cause of their issues. In my opinion, I feel that the use of regression is nearly always helpful for getting to the real root cause. In my experience, this makes it easier to move forward, allowing clients to let go of the past before taking on board new suggestions and thoughts.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy has many benefits when it comes to treating anxiety. Because it focuses on the subconscious mind, it can provide lasting results because it allows individuals to make changes at a deeper level than can be achieved through talking therapies. Additionally, it is non-invasive and requires no medications or other treatments.

Another great benefit of hypnotherapy is that it can help individuals understand how their thoughts are affecting their behaviour and how they can learn new ways of dealing with anxious thoughts and feelings. By understanding how our beliefs shape our behaviour, we can begin making positive changes that improve our overall well-being.

Hypnotherapy is an effective method that has been gaining attention due to its ability to provide rapid relief from symptoms and long-term management strategies for reducing stress and improving emotional well-being. It gives insight into underlying causes while helping individuals access deeply held patterns so they can make positive changes in their lives. For those looking for an alternative approach to managing their anxiety, hypnotherapy is well worth considering before trying more ‘traditional’ talking-based therapies.

One of the other huge benefits of hypnotherapy is that it is a ‘mood-lifting’ therapy. Clients nearly always finish a hypnotherapy session with me feeling better than before. They generally feel lighter and more relaxed and have made breakthroughs in understanding their thoughts, feelings and responses to situations.

In my personal experience, this is quite different to how I felt having attended talking therapy sessions. People who come to me have often been in talking therapy before and think that simply talking about their problems is no longer moving them forward.

Misconceptions About Hypnotherapy

Some common misconceptions about hypnotherapy can scare people off working with a hypnotherapist. Much of this has been created by the popularity of stage hypnotists (or Illusionists) who pick out people in the audience to run around and generally make a fool of themselves.  This is entertainment. The people who want to do this desire to be in the Spotlight. They are not randomly selected. The Illusionist will already know who is receptive and willing to follow their instructions.

Hollywood, too, likes to present hypnotherapy as some mystical mind control. An evil hypnotherapist makes a good movie even if it is not grounded in fact. The reality is, happily, somewhat different.

Hypnosis is an incredibly safe therapy that is based on proven neuroscience. Being hypnotised is simply about being in a deeply relaxed state where you are open to suggestions. You are totally aware and totally in control. People will not say or do anything they don’t want to do when they are in hypnosis. I can’t make you run around like a chicken!

The reality is that being hypnotised is like being in the flow. It is a pleasant experience. Being in the flow is when one reaches a heightened state of focus and productivity. This state involves slowing down and letting go to the point that anxiety fades away. It allows for more creativity and provides clarity and an essential feeling of being connected. Reaching a flow-like state enables individuals to stay present and direct their energy more meaningfully –– resulting in a much deeper sense of contentment than merely tackling tasks on autopilot.

Conclusion

Hypnotherapy is a safe and often fast-acting therapy that can effectively treat anxiety. Many Hypnotherapists combine hypnotherapy with the best parts of other therapists to get their clients the best outcomes. So clients get the best parts of different therapies, combined with the powerful medium of hypnotherapy that allows your mind to be open to the changes that you want.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful, pleasant experience that can help people to get unstuck. Many people make breakthroughs using hypnotherapy, having been ‘in therapy’ for months and years. Many clients say they wished they had found me or tried this earlier.
